Shattered
Shattered tells of the experiences of two ordinary teenagers, Jon and Hannah. Experiences on one ordinary night and how the events of that night shattered their lives…
Jon
“I get home late – or early, take your pick. The sun’s coming up. I throw my shirt away in the outside bin. I don’t want it. I don’t want anyone to see it. I go in quietly. No-one hears. I don’t want to see anyone. I don’t want to have to explain. I want to sleep. Forget it. Sleep.”
“It was funny and deep.”

Hannah
“So I’m dancing more, throwing myself about, and I’m pushing towards her, pushing towards the space she’s in and I catch her, with my arm, and she’s not smiling anymore. ’That hurt’ she says, all surprised. And I say “Good” and she says ‘What’s the matter?’ and she’s all innocent and shocked and wide-eyed and that makes me so angry I want to hit her. I do hit her. I hit her hard.”
“It could happen to anyone. It really made me think."

Developed specifically for post-16 audiences, and performed in schools, colleges and Youth Centres across Derbyshire since 2003, Shattered uses powerful characterisation, compelling drama and focused discussion activities to encourage audiences to –
- Identify the links between alcohol misuse and violence
- Recognise the risks to young people of becoming either a victim or an offender, and to suggest ways of minimising those risks
- Explore the criminal justice system in relation to young people, alcohol and violence
- Examine the wider social, emotional and lifestyle impacts of alcohol misuse and alcohol related violence.
Shattered was developed in close consultation with Derbyshire Healthy Schools, Derbyshire DAAT, Derbyshire Police and Derbyshire Local Education Authority.
“I liked the variety of characters and the way it flowed smoothly out of monologue and dialogue. The way it let you make up your own mind. I thought it was very original.”
