Clean?

“Why not? It’s all paid for.
Is any of us ever really clean? All the shit of our lives... the shit that gets us through the day? There’s nothing I can do to get rid of the shit I’m covered in, the shit Lisa sees when she looks at me.
Clean? I don’t think so.”

Steve is at a crossroads.
What is there to keep him from returning to his old ways?

Clean? is honest, direct and hard-hitting. Gripping and at times funny, it explores the choices we make in life, why we make them and the price we have to pay.

In a series of flashbacks the central character, Steve, tells the story of his life – his years as a heroin user, his struggles to get clean and stay clean, and the problems that lead him to the point of using again.

Addressing issues surrounding heroin and wider drug use, dependency, self-esteem, personal safety, decision making, parenting, self-image, emotional and psychological well-being and support, Clean? is a compelling package of dynamic performance and engaging, challenging participatory activities.

“It’s great! For our young people to sit and stay engaged and completely attentive is fantastic. They stayed completely with you.”
(PSHE Co-ordinator)

In schools, Clean? has been performed to Year 10 audiences in class size groups to ensure maximum impact and student involvement through intimacy and proximity.

Since 2002, Clean? has been performed over 600 times to a total audience across Derbyshire and South Yorkshire of almost 20,000 young people. The play has been highly acclaimed by students, teachers, community members and a wide range of professionals. Clean? was created with support and funding from Health Promoting Schools in North Derbyshire and Let’s Build. It was championed by Ali Kirk and Steve Ford from Derbyshire Local Education Authority and funded as a targeted Theatre-in-Health-Education initiative by the Derbyshire DAAT. A detailed evaluation report is available from Derbyshire LEA.

“Excellent. Thought-provoking. It left them with questions and points to discuss –it’s about consequences, self examination.”
(Head Teacher)
