Hardwick's Lost Princess

As part of the events surrounding the 400th anniversary of the death of Bess of Hardwick, Brief Candle Theatre have developed a brand new play - Hardwick's Lost Princess– exploring the fiery and tempestuous relationship between Bess and Arbella, her granddaughter, the young woman that Bess dreams will one day be Queen.

The piece has been developed in close consultation with Hardwick Hall and will be part of the Derbyshire Literature Festival 2008.

Hardwick's Lost Princess will tour to schools and other venues across the region in June and July, 2008, including public performances in the grounds of Hardwick Hall on 21st June 2008 and also at Derby Cathedral on 24th June 2008 (afternoon and evening)

Hardwick's Lost Princess is designed for upper KS2 / lower KS3 audiences.

In addition to being an engaging, moving and entertaining piece of high-quality young people’s theatre, Hardwick's Lost Princess will enhance the curriculum in the following ways –

  • Give greater understanding of life in Tudor England;
  • Provide opportunities for work around literacy and creative writing;
  • Provide opportunities for PSHE work around relationships, parenting and bullying;
  • Give a focus for discussion around human rights, power and responsibility.
