Summer 2010
There is lots happening at Brief Candle this year. Read below to see what we're up to.
Tight
Our Alcohol Education drama for Year 9 students is touring Derbyshire secondary schools until the end of July.
We have a fantastic cast this year who have re-imagined the play in a totally new way. It has been a delight working with this entirely new team and seeing them and the play develop in rehearsals.
We are scheduled to deliver 100 performances before the end of the summer term.

DERBY LIVE YOUTH THEATRE
We are very excited to be producing the 2010/11 production for the DLYT.
Paul Whitfield will write an original script for the company and David Shimwell will direct the 90 strong cast.
DLYT has a wonderful history and reputation. We were impressed and inspired by this years production of Lady with a Lamp, a historical drama based on the life of Florence Nightingale.
DLYT welcomes young actors aged 9-19yrs. Auditions for the DLYT will take place in September.

HOPE VALLEY COLLEGE
WORK EXPERIENCE PROJECT
David Shimwell and two members of the Brief Candle Company will work with a group of Year 10, Hope Valley College Drama students for two weeks this term.
The project will offer the students the opportunity to work in a professional theatre environment, with experienced theatre professionals, to create an original drama.
This is a totally new way of working for us and for the students, and we are excited by the potential it offers for learning and for creating new drama.

Shattered
Following the success of last year, Brief Candle Theatre was invited back by the Derbyshire Drug & Alcohol Action Team to deliver a performance of Shattered at their 2010 Conference - Alcohol: A Family Affair.
Held at the Swanwick Hayes Conference Centre in May, the conference was attended by health & community safety professionals, service users, carers & staff at a range of local authority, voluntary and criminal justice organisations.
Although Shattered was originally commissioned for post-16 students, delegates were highly responsive and very positive about the drama, making many enthusiastic suggestions, for example, that the play should be seen by those who work in the criminal justice system (particularly magistrates) as well as by parents and under 16’s, bringing different groups together.
